Join Erickson Aircraft Collection and the Exlporatorium for a fun filled weekend before the Total Solar Eclipse on Monday, August 21st - 10:19 am.

LIVE from the U.S.A.

AUGUST 21, 2017

On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will sweep across the U.S.A. The glorious sight of the fully eclipsed sun will be visible along a 60-mile-wide path arching from Oregon to South Carolina. Millions of people are expected to travel to this “path of totality” to watch as the moon entirely covers the face of the sun. Madras, Oregon is one of the top rated spots to view.

People in the rest of the country will experience a partial eclipse. For those who can’t make it to the path, the Exploratorium, with our NASA partners, will be filming the event from two different locations and sharing it with the world by live stream. Audiences can join us on this website, by mobile phone, or at special events in the museum and other institutions across the globe.

99 years before 2017, Oregon was visited by another total solar eclipse with a broadly similar path from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. The US Naval Observatory mounted an eclipse expedition to Baker City and this location will be revisited by the 2017 eclipse. At the 1918 total solar eclipse from Baker City, the artist Howard Russell Butler painted the Sun's corona. What you will see during totality will be similar but will far exceed what can be recorded with any photograph or painting.

Dan McGlaun of eclipse2017.org has a great page dedicated to detailed eclipse predictions for communities within the path of totality in Oregon at www.eclipse2017.org/2017/states/OR.htm

Cascade Kickoff Party - August 25, 2016 - 6 pm

The roots of the Airshow of the Cascades started more than 30 years ago when pilot Ron Ochs held “fly-ins” at his ranch just north of Madras. One plane at a time and through home grown hard work, the Airshow now draws upwards of 15,000 people.

With the help of our sponsors Willow Canyon Properties and the Airshow of the Cascades, we look to continue this spirit by taking a night to celebrate the many volunteers, businesses and members of the Central Oregon community that keep the tradition of aviation alive in Jefferson County.

Doors open at 6 pm. The event is free to the public.

Friday Fly Day with the SBD Dauntless & Ki43 Hayabusa "Oscar"

Join us Friday, April 29th at approximately 11:00 for our FRIDAY FLY DAY, here at Erickson Aircraft Collection, Madras, OR. This weeks fly day includes our Pilots Mike Oliver and Jim Martinelli, flying the SBD Dauntless and the Nakajima Ki43 Hayabusa "Oscar".  The SBD Dauntless was know as the "Slow but Deadly" Dive Bomber! It's inherent stability and light control response made directional corrections easier while dive bombing. It was equipped with a telescopic sight which increased bombing accuracy. Extended perforated dive flaps (or dive brakes) used during the attack run, could slow air speeds to permit longer and more accurate tracking of the target. Up to six "G" forces could be encountered during dive recovery.

The Ki43, nicknamed "Oscar" by the Allies also known as the Peregrine Falcon was the Imperial Japanese Army's most widely flown fighter of World War II and in numbers, its most important fighter in the Pacific War. With a top speed of 329 mph, a climb rate of 3,300 feet per minute and an incredible range, with drop tanks of almost 2000 miles, the Army's requirements were met. However, when the Hayabusas were pitted against the Flying Tigers P-40 Tomahawks in Burma, Japanese losses began to rise and from that time on, the allied forces referred to the Ki-43's as "Oscars". Over 6000 were built, but only a few remain today.

Join us at the Erickson Aircraft Collection this Friday, April 29th. Stop by the front desk to pay your admission and receive a sticker to watch our Friday Fly Day!.. Also at approximately noon, our guys will fly down to Bend Municipal Airport for the crowd in that area.  Join at either place for more fun!
